Courier charges from India to UK: rates per kg

India to UK courier charges and parcel charges are calculated per kg, the same way as shipping charges from India to UK. The courier cost, like the shipping cost from India to UK, depends on four things. Send us the weight and box size on WhatsApp and we reply with today's courier rate.

  • Weight: courier rates from India to UK are per kg, and the rate per kg usually falls as the parcel gets heavier.
  • Box size: light but bulky parcels are charged on volumetric weight.
  • Service: express or economy.
  • Contents: food, medicines and commercial goods need extra checks; documents are simplest.

How chargeable weight is worked out

You pay for the higher of two numbers: the actual weight, or the volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm, divided by 5,000 on most express networks). In this example, a heavy, compact parcel is charged on its actual weight:

40 × 30 × 20 ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg
Actual weight6 kg
Volumetric weight4.8 kg
You are charged for the higher one: 6 kg
35 × 25 × 25 cm, 2 kg actual → charged 4.38 kg 50 × 40 × 40 cm, 18 kg actual → charged 18 kg

How to keep your UK courier cheap

UK customs, VAT and duty on parcels from India

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) treats gifts and other goods differently:

  • Gifts worth £39 or less, sent by a private person in India to a private person in the UK for an occasion such as a birthday, have no UK VAT or customs duty.
  • Gifts worth more than £39 pay import VAT. Customs duty is added if the value is over £135.
  • Goods that are not gifts worth more than £135 pay import VAT and, depending on the goods, customs duty.
  • The receiver pays: the delivery company sends them a bill before delivery, and unpaid parcels are returned after about 3 weeks.
  • Alcohol and tobacco always attract excise duty, whatever the value.

Documents you need: a copy of your photo ID (such as Aadhaar or passport), the receiver's full UK address with postcode and phone number, and an itemised list of contents with values. Mark genuine gifts as gifts. Business parcels need a commercial invoice.
